Department head welcome message

Welcome to the website of Medical Parasitology Department, Faculty of Medicine, Mansoura University under the chairmanship of Prof. Ashraf Abdel Basset, President of Mansoura University, and Prof. Ashraf Mamdouh Shouma, Dean of Faculty of Medicine.

Medical Parasitology is the study of parasites that infect humans, the host-parasite interactions, the resultant diseases, their clinical picture, and different methods used for their diagnosis, as well as their treatment, prevention and controlmeasures. A parasite is an organism that lives on or in a host from which it gets nutrients. There are three main types of parasites that can cause diseases in humankind: helminths, protozoa, and arthropods.

Parasitic infections result in major burden of diseases in tropical, subtropical and temperate regions globally. Among parasitic diseases, malaria is the most morbid and mortal disease worldwide, affecting approximately 229 million and killing 409,000 individual annually mostly in sub-Saharan Africa. Schistosomiasis afflicts >290 million mainly in Africa, with approximately 4.5 million disability adjusted life years and 200,000 deaths annually. Among the Neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) that afflict > one billion individual globally a group of parasitic diseases are common in low-income regions in Africa, Asia and America, and their effects are comparable to those of tuberculosis and malaria.

The department offers several developed undergraduate and graduate courses for medical and non-medical students taking into consideration students, community, market, and regional as well as international needs. Our teaching strategies prepare qualified students by creating an environment where e-learning, self-directed learning and problem based-learning, critical appraisal and communication skills are implemented in small teaching groups.

Our staff members are endeavoring for innovative approaches in many researches covering cellular & molecular biology and immunology fields with special emphasis on host-parasite interactions, anddiscovery of new anti-parasitic therapies.

With my best regards
