Director’s Welcome
On behalf of the scientists, researchers and trainees I would like to welcome you to the Medical Experimental Research Center of Mansoura University or MERC (as we used to call in Mansoura!).
MERC was born few years ago, inside school of Medicine. Establishment of MERC was accomplished through the vision of Prof. Mohamed A. Sobh -the pioneer nephrologist and the founder of MERC.
Our strategic goal was to introduce the concept of basic research to staff and students of Mansoura School of Medicine. I believe we succeeded in fulfilling this goal. Each year, MERC receives more and more proposals from staff and PhD students to do their research in our units.
We believe it is time move forward! MERC through international collaboration with different centers and institutions all over the world is ready to be an internationally competitive research center. We believe that through our short journey MERC has evolved from a new born research unit to a hub for translational research in Egypt and soon in Middle East.

About the Experimental Medical Research Center
When established in 2009, the Medical Experimental Research Center (MERC) mission was to foster basic & translational research among University staff & students, We believe MERC was successful in accomplishing its mission with the increase demand by staff& students in doing research. In the next stage of its evolution, The Medical Experimental Research Center of Mansoura University (MERC) was established in 2009. The main goal of MERC was to bridge the gap between basic and clinical research.
Through the different units, MERC could perform translational research in different areas e.g. stem cell research, neuroscience, cellular models of diseases and more! In short period, MERC could attract recognition -both nationally and internationally. Through awards and grants from -Science and Technology Development Fund (STDF), Academy of Scientific Research and Technology (ASRT).
Recently, MERC was chosen as the Middle East Collaborating Site for the Genetic Epidemiology of Parkinson’s Disease Consortium (GEoPD) in recognition of the outstanding activities of MERC in unraveling genetics of PD in Egyptian patients. More recently, MERC has been chosen as center of excellence for IBRO MENA organization
