Community Services and Laboratories
The Pathology Department provides many medical community- services. It plays a fundamental and key role in providing these medical services to the residents of the Delta, Egypt and the neighboring governorates where:
- These services are provided by the pathology department staff members and their assistants, including assistant professors, demonstrators, technicians and secretaries. When selecting those in charge of these tasks, it is taken into account that they are at an eminent scientific and technical level and a high-degree of professional performance and commitment.
- These services are provided by the pathology department laboratory and pathology laboratories in the Medical Centers and Hospitals of Mansoura University.
- Services
- Surgical specimen analysis: where surgical specimens, obtained by all surgical methods, are received, whether from inside or outside the University Hospitals and Centers. The specimens are recorded in the department’s files, and then are examined, cut and dissected. Paraffin blocks and glass-slides are prepared and stained. Following diagnosis, each case is provided with a detailed report with mentioned diagnosis and recommendations.
- Cytological analysis: where fluid samples are received for examination of cells, some samples are also withdrawn inside the lab for the purpose of preliminary diagnosis of cases before surgery. We receive cases from all sectors. The slides are stained and examined, and each case is provided with a separate report.
- Slide revision: All paraffin blocks and external glass slides are received to revise the diagnosis and submit a separate report.
- Frozen section: It is one of the most important intraoperative diagnostic tools that aims to diagnose the nature and the extent of a diseases during surgery by freezing and sectioning tissue samples in a short time to become suitable for microscopic examination, thus helps surgeons to apply the most appropriate surgical procedure for each patient according to the provisional pathological diagnosis.
- Immunohistochemical stains: The pathology department laboratories are distinguished by the presence of a wide range of diagnostic and prognostic immunohistochemical stains, and this service is provided for both internal and external cases.
- Microscopic imaging of slides: slides are photographed through an advanced microscope connected to a high-resolution digital camera. This service can be provided for postgraduate students and researchers from various medical specialties in Mansoura University.
- Linking medical reports: The pathology reports are written, uploaded and archived with the final diagnosis through the electronic system "Ibn Sina" for Mansoura University Hospitals and Centers. This advance helps the physicians to quickly access the patient's clinical and pathological data and revise the patient’s history and all results of previous samples accurately and at any time through the electronic database.
- Archiving paraffin blocks and slides: All routine and immunohistochemical slides and paraffin blocks are archived with the sample code-number and the digital sequence of samples, which facilitates their extraction for the purpose of revision or being delivered to the patient upon his request with administrative approval for that.
