Basic Science Research – Student opportunity-
“CENTER OF EXCELLENCE GRANT” (2020)
Mansoura Manchester program for medical Education (MMPME) administration in collaboration with the Medical Experimental Research Center (MERC) are providing the opportunity to support 5 research grants dedicated to medical students in Faculty of Medicine- Mansoura University. Grants are funded and supported exclusively by MMPME.
The program aims to encourage Mansoura faculty of medicine students to be engaged in a well-adjusted research environment that provides you with the basics of medical research, teamwork, scientific writing, and publishing.
Regarding the Scope of research, applications from all areas of medical science will be considered. The submitted proposals should be in basic research pertaining to the broad area of health care and under the supervision of staff member at Mansoura faculty of medicine. All the remaining terms and conditions are mentioned attached file on your MOODLE page (Eligibility criteria, Dates, Fund, Proposal structure, selection process, and project evaluation).
تم قبول الطلبة المتقدمين للمنحة وتقسيمهم على 5 مجموعات
Beside the main objective of MERC which is “conducting a high quality research” we are pleased to offer various training and continuous education activities as follows:
1. Egyptian Network for Neurodegenerative Disorders (ENND):
MERC is the coordinating nucleus for ENND, through this we are organizing a yearly translational summer school which connect 30 Egyptian students with international speakers from all-over the world. Students are funded totally for free registration and accommodation.
More important ENND supports the travel of three Egyptian postgraduate students -yearly- to Munich for training on various basic and clinical techniques in Technical University of Munich and German Center for Neuro degenerative disorders.
2. Different hands on training workshops e.g. workshop on stem cells isolation, microsurgical techniques, animal handling etc.
3. IBRO (International Brain Research Organization). activities: currently, MERC is a center of excellence for IBRO-MENA chapter. Through this, MERC is planned to receive scholars- who are funded from IBRO to study certain techniques e.g. cell culture, stereotaxis aided brain surgeries – from different countries of Middle East.
MERC organizes yearly IBRO school who receives students from Africa and Middle East and offer them access to pioneers in the field from all over the world.
4. MERC supports training of undergraduate students through offering summer grants to join research teams in MERC. Through this program, different students had the opportunity to publish their works in international journals. More recently, two students from MERC were invited to present their work as a webinar for Middle East Molecular Biology Society (MEMBS) educational resources.
5. TReND in Africa Focal Point: MERC is the focal point for TReND in Africa inside Egypt. Main aim of TReND is to support the short stays of volunteers from European institutions to transfer knowledge and offer training for African students. MERC is waiting the first visit by Dr. Natalie Doig (Oxford University) who will be the first expert visiting MERC through this European Union funded program.
6. Tranlsational Neuroscience Summer School II (TNSS), Hurghada september 24-28th, 2017. the school supported 30 students from allover Egypt plus a variety of international and national faculty. 3 students were awarded short term scholarships for travel to Munich Germany.
7. Neuroethics symposium (MERC, IBRO, AUC) November, 28,29th 2017
Based on ongoing research in MERC, publication process is a continuous process.
From 2011 till 2020 MERC succeeded to produce the following HIGH QUALITY RESEARCH:
German Center for Neurodegenrative Diseases (DZNE, Munich):
https://www.dzne.de/en/sites/munich.html
The collaboration with DZNE, Munich is coordinated through Translational Neurodegeneration Department. For five years MERC and DZNE has been involved in DAAD funded projects to characterize genetic and epidemiological factors controlling Parkinson’s disease.
Department of Pharmacology and Cancer Biology, Duke University Medical Center:
http://pcb.duke.edu/
For about four years, MERC in collaboration with Pharmacology and Cancer Biology, Duke University, are trying to develop new biomarkers for diagnosis of brain damage. The collaboration has been generously funded by IBRO, ISN, Mansoura University Competitive Grants Program and Academy of Scientific Research and Technology (ASRT).
Luxembourg Center for Systems Bioscience (LCSB):
http://wwwen.uni.lu/lcsb
LCSB and MERC are currently involved in establishment of a new bioinformatic center and integrated biobank for future application in research in the biomedical field.
Genetic Epidemiology of Parkinson’s Disease (GEoPD):
http://geopd.can.ubc.ca/
MERC is currently the newest member of GeoPD and is considered the first member in the Middle East. The main goal of this collaboration is to identify novel environmental and genetic risk factors for PD in Africa.
Department of Chemical Engineering, Northeastern University, USA:
http://www.che.neu.edu/che/about-chemical-engineering
This collaboration aims to explore the possibility of applying nanotechnology in regenerative Medicine.
Global Brain Health Institute (GBHI) USA
