   What’s Tropical Medicine Department?

The Tropical Medicine Department is involved both academically and clinically in the medical care of patients suffering from diseases of infectious nature as well as those of hepatic and gastrointestinal origin. Students of any nationality, whether undergraduate medical students or postgraduate Master and MD students, as well as those seeking degrees of the Egyptian Hepatology and Gastroenterology Fellowship (affiliated with the Higher Committee of Medical Specialties of the Ministry of Health and Population) and the Arab Board of Infectious Diseases, experience a high level of academics and training in the department’s clinics and ward. The outpatient clinics either follow-up patients with liver cell failure or admit the more advanced cases into the department’s 33 bed inpatient ward where care for encephalopathy and procedures such as abdominal paracentesis for ascites are undertaken. The specialized hepatic virology clinic plays an important role in detection and follow-up of cases. Hepatocellular carcinoma clinic for fibrosis follow-up and early detection of HCC are also available. The hospital ward additionally houses a couple of specialized units, including the hepatic intervention unit as well the endoscopy unit (upper and lower). The department also claims the Molecular Genetic Unit in Hepatogastroenterology and Infectious Diseases (MGUHID) utilized in a variety of research conducted by the department.
