The Unit Services

* Diagnostic, therapeutic and rehabilitative medical services:

(1) Providing distinguished and advanced health services in the domains of diagnosis and treatment of communication disorders, which include language disorders, speech disorders, voice disorders, and swallowing disorders for children and adults:

- Language disorders, including:

(a) Delayed language development in children due to its various causes.

(B) Learning disabilities in children.

(C) Dysphasia in adults (which is the loss of language after its development) and the accompanying problems.

- Speech disorders including stuttering, dysarthria, nasality, and dyslalia.

- Voice disorders, including dysphonia with its various organic and functional causes, and rehabilitation of laryngectomized patients.

- Swallowing disorders in adults and children.

(2) Providing rehabilitation programs in the field of speech pathology and care for people with special needs, and these programs are presented on a regular basis “two or three times a week”.

 (3) Interdisciplinary team meeting for evaluation of problematic cases (Phoniatrics unit, Neurology Department, Plastic Surgery Department, Pediatric Surgery Department, Neurosurgery Department, Dental Prosthetics Department...) on weekly basis in the phoniatric unit.

(4) Designing a rehabilitation computer program for people with hearing impairment and cochlear implants (“Karawan” for habilitation of hearing-impaired children) and registering it at the Intellectual Rights Preservation Office at the Ministry of Communications in the Smart Village.

 

* The unit provides its services through a daily outpatient clinic from Saturday to Thursday (outpatient clinics - Gehan Street) in addition to specialized clinics in the unit, including:

- Oropharyngeal dysphagia clinic for children and adults.

- Cochlear implant clinic.

- Learning Disabilities Clinic.

- Nasality Clinic.

* In addition to this, the Phoniatrics Unit conducts the following:

- Laryngeal imaging using rigid and flexible optical endoscopes.

- Radiological assessment of swallowing disorders (in cooperation with the Department of Diagnostic Radiology).

- Conducting abilities and intelligence tests (through the psychometric specialists working in the unit).

- Carrying out different formal tests including language, articulation, dysphasia and learning disabilities tests.

* Educational services:

1- Teaching the “Phoniatrics” curriculum for students of the fourth year of the Faculty of Medicine and students of the Manchester program.

2- The establishment of master’s and doctoral degrees in Phoniatrics was approved by the new regulations for postgraduate studies of the Faculty of Medicine, Mansoura University (starting from the academic year 2011-2012).

3- Providing lectures in the field of phoniatrics for postgraduate students.

4- Organizing seminars and workshops in the field of Phoniatrics.

5- Participation of Phoniatric staff members in several local and international conferences in the field of phoniatrics and distributing their scientific research and informative lectures.

6- One of the faculty members in the unit (Prof. Dr. Tamer Abou-Elsaad) supervised the Phoniatrics Unit, Faculty of Medicine, Zagazig University, from 2005 to 2011, and the Phoniatrics Unit, Faculty of Medicine, Kafr El-Sheikh University from 2017 until now.

7- The Phoniatrics Unit at Mansoura College of Medicine has established the official website of the Egyptian Society for Phoniatrics and Logopedics on the Internet (www.espl-egypt.org) in cooperation with the E-Learning Unit at Mansoura College of Medicine.

* Research services:

1- Several research papers published in local and international journals, including joint researches among the faculty members of the unit and also in collaboration with the phoniatrics units and other specialities (medical and non-medical) in Egyptian universities.

2- Ongoing research is currently carried out among the faculty members of the unit and also in collaboration with the phoniatrics units and other specialities in Egyptian universities.

3- The Staff members of Phoniatrics Unit are currently supervising 22 master's theses and 8 doctoral theses.

3- Faculty members of the phoniatrics Unit at Mansoura College of Medicine participated in supervising master’s and doctoral theses (21 master’s theses and 4 Ph.D. theses) belonging to various scientific departments:

A- Inside Mansoura University (Otolaryngology Department, Prosthodontics Department, Faculty of Dentistry, Public Health Department, Faculty of Nursing, Faculty of Physical Education).

B- In Egyptian universities (Ain Shams University, Zagazig University, South Valley University (Sohag Faculty of Medicine).
