Services and Units

The department provides a wide range of diagnostic and treatment services for cancer patients through their journey. These services started with screening and early detection through diagnosis and staging of cancer using different conventional and molecular imaging and biochemical procedures then systemic treatment including chemotherapy, hormonal therapy, target therapy and immunotherapy as well as external beam radiotherapy and radioactive iodine therapy. Palliative and supportive care services are also provided through dedicated clinics to ensure symptom control and compliance with active cancer treatment. Pain control drugs including opioid medications are available on need through the palliative care clinic which also can handle professionally the end of life care. All these services are provided by multidisciplinary teams including well trained physicians, clinical pharmacists, nurses, technicians and social workers. The following dedicated highly specialized units are working every day to ensure high quality cancer care:

Outpatient clinics Unit (The 1st floor):

Newly diagnosed cancer patients as well as those receiving active cancer treatment and survivors are being seen in the clinic daily from Saturday to Thursday. The whole process of patient's care is managed by the specialized clinic. The patient will be directed to the relevant care unit e.g chemotherapy, radiotherapy or inpatient ward unit to receive the assigned treatment prescribed by the attending doctors and provided by the residents and fellows.

Radiation therapy Unit (The basement):

The department has a long experience with different external beam radiotherapy techniques which developed over the years from 2D based treatment to 3D conformal radiotherapy treatment for different tumor sites using both photon and electron beam therapy. The units is equipped with a Linear Accelerator and C060 facilities which are connected to a modern 3DCRT based treatment planning system and a recent CT simulator. A multidisciplinary team formed of physicians, medical physicists and radiotherapy technicians is working in harmony to provide the precise high quality treatment for each patient. The unit is supported with a qualified team of medical physicists who work with physicians to ensure precise targeting of the tumor and protection of surrounding normal organs.

Radiotherapy sessions are being delivered daily throughout the week except Thursday and Friday. Thursdays are for kept for emergency treatments and periodic maintenance of the device.

Chemotherapy and Day care Unit (The basement):

A dedicated highly qualified team of physicians, clinical pharmacists and nurses are responsible for safe handling preparation and infusion of different anticancer drugs. The units is equipped with a modern laminar flow unit which help clinical pharmacists to prepare cancer drugs in a safe and sterilized environment and ensure safe waste disposal.

The unit is formed of separate female and male rooms for chemotherapy infusions. Each room is being supervised by a head nurse and a team of oncology trained nurses qualified to provide a peripheral and central venous access and manage infusion reactions and extravasations. A resident supervised by a assistant lecturer are responsible for monitoring the process of preparation and safe delivery of chemotherapy all days of the week.

Inpatient wards Unit (The Fifth floor):

Separate male and female wards are available to provide high quality care to admitted cancer patients. The unit has 53 beds ready for patients requiring long chemotherapy infusions, those receiving multiple days of chemotherapy, those coming from remote rural areas to receive radiotherapy and those requiring admission to manage critical cancer therapy related side effects e.g febrile neutropenia, dehydration…etc.

On 2019, a separate palliative care inpatient units with 8 beds was established and linked to the palliative care clinic and managed by the palliative care team to provide pain and other symptoms control as well as the end of life care.

Nuclear Medicine Unit (The third floor):

The dedicated Nuclear medicine unit is responsible for the use of radioactive materials for different diagnostic and therapeutic indications for both benign and malignant diseases. These services are provided by a qualified multidisciplinary team of nuclear medicine physicians, medical physicists, nurses and technicians.

The unit is equipped with a modern double head gamma camera detected for planar and tomographic nuclear medicine studies. The unit has a dedicated hot lab room with restricted access and a high radiation protection facilities where the radioactive materials are prepared and calibrated then given to the patients through and IV access or orally.

The unit is working every day throughout the week except Friday. A wide range of diagnostic procedures are provided including bone, heart, thyroid, parathyroid and renal scintigraphy.

Radioactive iodine is a high effective treatment for patients with thyroid diseases including multinodular and toxic goiter and thyroid cancer. Patients who receive high radioactive iodine doses are admitted and isolated in a dedicated well prepared inpatient unit with 10 beds with a high level of radiation protection and waste disposal.

Palliative Care Unit:

A recently established unit managed by a highly qualified team dedicated to provide pain and symptom control as well as the end of life care services to cancer patients. The team is working in collaboration with other departments of the hospital to provide a multidisciplinary care. The service is provided through a palliative care clinic in the basement floor every Saturday and Tuesday and a palliative care inpatient ward with 8 beds in the fifth floor.
